| August 28, 2009 | Supernatural Flashback: “What Is and What Should Never Be” Review |
What if Dean and Sam’s mother had not died? What if there had never been a reason for any of the Winchester men to have become hunters? What if the brothers had been given a chance at a normal life? This alternate reality is what Dean experiences when a Djinn gives him a vision of what could have been. Supernatural has never shied away from putting their characters through terrible ordeals and Dean getting a chance to see what a normal life would have been like, only to lose it again, is right up there with some of the other tragedies the Winchesters have experienced. His wish is for a life that is so ordinary that it is truly sad he has never been able to experience these things before. He is so happy to just eat a sandwich made by his mom and drink a beer out on the porch that it will break your heart. Read the rest of this entry » |

| August 23, 2009 | Supernatural Flashback: “Hollywood Babylon” Review |
In the very fun “Hollywood Babylon“, Dean and Sam infiltrate a film set and must figure out how and why it is being haunted. Meanwhile, Supernatural takes the opportunity to skewer Hollywood, the horror movie genre, and itself. From the beginning, when Sam jumps off a tour bus when it turns toward the set of Gilmore Girls, to the end where the boys walk into the sunset, the episode is an enjoyable overabundance of show business jokes, many of them self-referential. There is an actress who can’t manage a believable scream because she only has a tennis ball as a reference point, a cheesy director named McG (after one of the Supernatural producers), and a fake movie trailer for Hell Hazers II: The Reckoning, which looks like it would be terrible, by the way. It’s hard to choose what the funniest moment is, there are so many good ones. There are inane questions from a studio exec who wants to know things like: If the ghosts are in hell, how do they hear the chanting? This amusingly leads to a rewrite in the script being filmed to add a line about the ghosts having super hearing. That is ridiculous enough to make one believe it has probably happened on the set of Supernatural itself. Read the rest of this entry » |

| August 21, 2009 | Supernatural Flashback: “Heart” Review |
Sam loses his heart – no, not literally. After several people are killed and have their hearts ripped out by a werewolf, Dean and Sam arrive, hunting for the monster. The title “Heart” references both the victims’ hearts being taken, and also Sam’s heart being broken, as he falls for the doomed Madison. Played by the very beautiful Emmanuelle Vaugier, Madison is almost the perfect girl; she is smart, funny, and flirty. There is one very large hitch however, one that Sam discovers while he supposedly is protecting her from the werewolf. It turns out that Madison doesn’t need the protection herself, what she needs is for Sam to protect the rest of the community from her. The revelation of Madison’s condition is not quite as shocking as it should be, partly because the ex-boyfriend Dean and Sam initially suspect is too obvious. When the pieces fall that easily into place, it often is a red herring. Another much too obvious character is the neighbor Glen. When he is first introduced he is wearing a church t-shirt and acting oddly enough that it is easy to guess there will be a “surprising” darkness revealed at some point. What is more surprising is when a show manages to avoid using the church-goer-turns-out-to-be-evil stereotype. Read the rest of this entry » |
